No it needs a UV/heat lamp  or one of each heat, uvb.

They need the heat to warm up to help digest their food.

They also need cool areas to hide in.

If you build a pen out side for it you wont need one.

I made mine covered so no predators could get in. Mesh on the bottom to so they cant dig out.
