Baby chews w/ mouth closed?

Does your baby also chew with his/her mouth closed? When do they start chewing with the mouth open? I always just assumed that children started out chewing with their mouths wide open but now that I have a little son who is 11 months it has struck me that he NEVER does...

  1. Your son is perfectly fine.

Some babies chew with mouth open and many with mouth closed. This is not a problem to be worried about.

For your satisfaction, you can try to give your baby some food and try to examine that(from taking it out from his mouth) whether its well chewed by him.

Also keep in mind that the babies can chew better when they have their grinding teeth(than cutting and tearing ones).

  2. My 9 month old chews with his mouth closed (he always has).

  3. It's natural to chew with the mouth closed - keeps the food in and makes chewing easier.

It's only when kids start to talk a lot that you have to give them that long-standing rebuke "Chew with your mouth closed!"

Or you see those classic skits with the spaghetti face - but even those pictures usually have the mouth closed!

  4. My son chews with his mouth closed as well. I agree... keeps the food in! LOL

  5. Perhaps he's a posh baby, lay out some pate and water biscuits and see what he does.
