by baby cockatiel is just 26 days old today. the mother and father are doing a pretty good job up to now although i have noticed some strange behaviour. i noticed that the mother has been jumping on the baby's back serveral times. the baby doesn't seem to like it but it cant get away/. the father also pecks softly at the chick quite often. the father is also loosing its top little feather thingy and also has a bold spot on the back of its head (note: the male isn't a lutino). i need to know whether its safe to leave the baby with the mother or i should step in. i have reseached alot about this. the only thing im not sure on if you have to feed it every 2? 4? or 6 hours? i've seem to get mixed answers. so yehh i just really need to know what to do with the baby.

please its urgent- i've already lost one cockatiel this year i dont want to loose another.

  1. if you want the most accurate answer.....

call an avian vet they will give you free advice over the phone!

you need to separate the baby. if the mother has not already disabled the infant i will be shocked. most likely the infant will need to be x-rayed to make sure nothing is broken or deformed.

call an avian vet they can help you over the phone for free.

Get the baby out and at least hand feed it formula for baby birds every 2-3hrs in small amounts to prevent over feeding until you can reach a vet.

The birds are horrible parents and should not be a breeding pair.

    Best wishes.

  2. the male is a female

the male grabs the back of the female while mating and it rips the feathers out

if you have touched the babies or are looking in there the parents worried your going to harm them so they might try and kill the babies

the female is peaking at them to try and kick them out of the nestbecause she probably wants to start a new clutch

if they do get kicked out then you will need to feed them

i would say the male is jumping on them to try and keep them warm but the babies dont want to be under there

or its just trying to protect its babies while your looking in

i would say all this funny behaviour is only happening when you look in on them

the best thing to do is just let nature take its cource

  3. Just like humans (well not exactly), there seem to be good parents and bad parents. Your ones are bad parents. First thing to do is go on www.parrotplace.ca (or even better, an avian vet), locate a cockatiel breeder (there's a whole list of them) and ask what to do. And I don't know about cockatiels, but I think that a baby of your age has to be fed every 4-6 hours around the clock (whenever his crop pouch is deflated), but do research first; you need to take lot of caution before hand-feeding birds yourself. Things such as food temperature, age of bird, the bird's inherited appetite etc. all make a difference (food temp. in particular can kill a bird if not right). So get professional advice from the sources I gave.
