Question:

Baby family naming, would there be conflict?

We are having a little boy- and wish to name him John Rae and our last name- Now, the thing is that my husbands name isn't john, and his father isn't john, but his grandfather, and every male before him was named john rae and our last name- Would there be any conflicts we should look out for? all other John Rae's in our family are deceased already, and lived in different states then us... I am aware that since the name would be exactly the same there would usually be a suffix, like JR, Sr, II, III, etc, but my child would just be John Rae with no steps since his father isn't named John Rae, right?

Sorry if this seems complicated...

  1. I don't see why there would be any problems. But yeah, I would think it would be John Rae with no suffix since a couple of generations were skipped. He's not a Jr because he doesn't have his dad's name.

  2. I think John Rae is a cool name

I do not see any conflict, if non are living

  3. I'm pretty sure there would be no Jr. or anything because the name skipped a couple generations. I like the name too :)

  4. Keeep the name Going. Nice to have a Little Tradition.

John is Biblical  (  who needs nuimbers , numbers are in Bible Acts 1, 11, etc.

JOHN RAE WILL BE UNIQUE AND RELATED TO THE OTHERS.

    Go for it.

  5. Yes. or you could go with John Ray.

  6. John Rae is a cool name (although I do prefer R-A-E for a girl and R-A-Y for a boy but I know you are naming him after someone).

Since so many generations were skipped I don't think you need a suffix, and if you did, you might have trouble coming up with the proper suffix.

Since there is such a huge age difference between your John Rae and the last John Rae I don't think you should have trouble either like my cousin does. He and his deadbeat dad have the same name (let's say Michael James, Sr. and Michael James, Jr.) and Michael, Jr. always has bill collectors calling for him and not believing he is different from his father because they have the exact same name (not counting the suffix).

  7. There shouldn't be any trouble since they're all deceased but anything is possible. Every once in a while my dad (Jack jr) still gets bill collectors calling because of my grandpa (Jack sr) and he died 7 years ago.

Your son could still be John Rae IV (or whatever) if you wanted him to be. A friend of mine is III but his grandfather was Jr, not his dad. Seems to me that if you're naming your son John Rae to continue a family tradition then he should have the suffix, but that's just my opinion.

    Good luck!

  8. There wouldn't be any suffix because the others are dead and the was a broken sort of link in the chain for two generations [your husband and his father] so i don't think it would be a problem.

  9. I don't think there should be any conflict! The other family members would be honored if anything, I'm sure.

I've always loved the name John :) And I'm glad to see you keeping the tradition ;)

    Have a star!
