I had three fish inn my fish tank. Last night I noticed that there was a tiny baby fish. So I put him in one of those floating things. Im not sure which one of my fish had the baby because none of then were noticeably preganant.

So my question is:

Is it possible for a fish to have only one baby?

and

Does the mother fish die after birth?

  1. Well It is possible your molly fish had the baby that or you were lucky and a baby followed you home LOL but mostly the mother fish will not die after birth

  2. Most live bearers have many more than one, but if it a small and immature fish, it may be possible to only have one.  The smallest litter I have ever had was 4 guppies.  The mom was very immature Most of the time the mom fish does not die after birth unless she is REALLY old, or had a huge surplus of babies.

ADD ON: It was probably the mollie, what color was she???  What color was the baby???

ADD ON:  But neons lay eggs and you woulda seen those and there would be hundreds of them so I don't think you woulda only seen one.  ANd they take a week to get where the size of a mollie or visable baby is.

  3. she won't die and the other fry are probably hiding or have been eaten, which are both normal. You should know the gender of the fish before buying them because you should always have more female than male.

  4. What you have there is a molly fry.  They are pretty colorless when they are newborn.  Your molly was likely pregnant when you got her from the store and probably sick as well.  Most fish will try to give birth before they die if they are sick.  It's a survival trait to try to keep the species going.  A sick fish may have premature fry or very few fry and newborn fry will do their best to hide so that they don't get eaten.  Likely you will start to see more fry lurking about the bottom of your tank and hiding in the plants as the days go by and they become bigger and braver.  The fry that's in the seperate enclosure is swimming around more as it discovers that it's safe in its own little area.  You'll need to crush some of your regular fish food to powder to feed the fry in the "floating thing", but any others that are hiding in the tank can probably survive off of algae and tiny organisms (infusoria) that grow on the plants and decorations in the tank if you have an established tank.  If not, put a little crushed up food in the tank for them as well.  Mashed up egg yolk mixed with a bit of tank water is a good fry food as well, but don't feed too much our you will cloud your water.  Fry only need the tiniest bit of food to thrive, but they like to eat quite often.

  5. it is possible to have a small amount of eggs or fry.... but only one? I dont think so, most likely all the other fish (including the parents) ate the eggs and or fry. tell us what type of fish you have and we can give you a little more information.

btw its not normal for a mother to die after birth unless she was stressed.

EDIT: It probably was the molly its a livebearer and it probably was pregant when you got it. Its okay if the fry is grey most fry are! They dont show any color for a couple of weeks.  (unless its a dark color like a black molly then the fry will be dark)

make sure to feed your fry or it'll die. go to a pet store and ask them for help. they'll point you in the right direction.

    good luck with your baby!
