  1. These flashcards are based on the research by Glenn Doman and referred to in his books, Teach Your Baby to Read and Teach Your Baby Math. His organization, the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential is geared for working with children with traumatic brain injury and their parents, and his research has broadened to using the techniques and materials with non-special needs preschoolers. I used Bits of Intelligence Cards with my own children in our homeschool and loved them. We had a wonderful time talking about the world around us. I also tried the large red sight word cards and did not feel they made any difference. We enjoyed the math dot cards, but I would not attribute any significant academic achievement to these. We just had fun "playing" with the cards, doing a LOT of talking.

I understand other commenters about hands-on learning, but one of the premises of this approach is that even very young children are stimulated more by real-life information than cutsie-pie toys that are designed to keep them busy and occupied while adults are doing important chores. These cards gave me opportunities to pool other resources and toys that would reinforce the topics we covered--topics like: musical instruments, birds, flowers, presidents, explorers, and more.

Here is the official website to order the materials. You can make your own, but we found we liked the big, bright cards more than assembling our own.

  2. Are you talking about vocabulary enhancement flash cards?  Those would be fine - such as:  what is this?  Although picture books would do the same.  Math flash cards at 16 months old is a bit crazy in my opinion!!  Let him be a baby  - he'll be schooled soon enough.

  3. AHH!  I would avoid them.  Babies learn best through hands on exploration of their surrounding. I would avoid the flash cards.  Books are a great way to help him learn about things that he does not have hands-on experiences with.  Just doing things with him will help him learn.  Let him help you load the dishwasher, put clothes into the washer.  Just talk to him as you do it.  Talk to him all day about what you are doing, what he is doing.  When playing, comment on his play.  "You have the green block."  Avoid TV, and flashcards.  Interact with him all day, and let him explore his world around him.

  4. I can not comment on the benefits of flashcards for babies and tots as I have never use them. However I think books and interaction with babies is the most beneficial for both the child and the parent. This is not just a great way to learning academically but it is a time for bonding between the adult and child. Talk without using baby-talk, sing and point to things. Touch and let him touch trees, leaves, flowers, puppies, kittens etc. Breath through your nose and say to the baby what you smell. Listen for noises and tell him what you hear. The world is full of things to learn.

  5. i work in childcare and i think babies can really benefit from these type of activties. they like to point at the pictures and you say what it is.. when they begin talking they like to copy it after you say it. depending on the pictures and everything but i would suggest using simple pictures..

also you can get textured cards like with fluffy bits or rough or bumpy parts on them.. babies love these too

  6. Flash cards for babies isn't as beneficial as hands-on and interactive learning.  Babies learn best by watching you, looking at books with you as you describe things within the pictures, allowing babies to explore new textures, nature, and their at-home environment.  A stack of cards cannot give a baby your attention and your facial expressions and language.  Naming things on a card cannot give babies the info they need...only YOU can do that.

  7. my mom has like the ones like 2+3=5 and a pic and i would have to guess what the pic is
