my son tried green beans for the first time.... and a day later his right cheek was really red, at first i thought it was just from napping on his cheek, but then it didnt go away... but im also thinking maybe its from him teething and drooling while he sleeps... what does an allergic reaction to baby food usually look like?

  1. It could be anything. It does sound allot like a reaction to something that happened. It could be from him eating the new food. If it was drooling or napping on it, it would go away soon. Don't feed him the food again, and don't give him any medicine at the moment. Take him to his pediatrician, if you have one, and tell the doctor about it. They might have the right prescription to take away the swelling. Hope I helped! Good luck! ♥

  2. usually an allergic reaction is very noticeable and starts at the time of feeding. he would break out in a rash all over his face or his mouth/lips/tongue would swell..he would vomit, cry, etc...im sure it is from teething. just spread some infant tylenol on his gums and the inside of his cheeks (make sure not to go over the recommended dosage!!) i was always told not to put cortizone on babies..it thins the skin and therefore is not recommended for children under 2..

  3. An allergic reaction usually involves diarrhea, vomiting, rash, runny nose, etc.

I think that your son's red cheeks are most likely from the teething. My son gets that every time he cuts a tooth. Try putting some Cortizone 10 cream on his cheeks (yes, it's ok to put on his face, just keep it out of his mouth) that is what I do for my son and it clears up instantly; it was the recommendation of my son's Pediatrician.

  4. One needs more then one exposure to something to become allergic, and a while as well for the immune system to develop the allergic reaction.  And too the allergic reaction will occur rapidly, like within a few minutes, upon exposure to the offending allergen.  Green beans are rarely a food that one develops allergies too.

Food allergies in infants and children most often appear as hives on their trunk and limbs, not their face, and it does not stay that long.  Your son was surely getting an irritation from teething.  If you don't believe that, try a tiny bit of green beans again in a week and see how he fares.
