Question:

Baby guppies........?

hi

yesterday my last remaining guppy gave birth (we have had a problem keeping them, they have all died within 2 months for no apparent reason) she had about 14 fry, however she didn't look to good afterwards (not that i blame her, i didn't look too hot after popping out one baby!) but this morning we found her dead.

i have removed her from the tank but just wondered whether the babies will survive without her, and should i be doing anything differently to look after them. i have been feeding them fish flakes but broken down so they are a lot lot smaller.

we also have become over run with snails (which i asked about before and people said this would happen!) will the snails harm the babies?

thanks in advance x

  1. they fry will be fine without the mummy guppy, they dont need their mum at all, try feeding the fry with baby brine shrimp, available at any good fish shop, this will increase the growth rate of the babies, the babies should be fully grown within about two months, do the babies have plenty space, as lack of space can stunt there growth and cause stress and eventually death.

EDIT: its ok for your babies to be that small if they were just born yesterday, and dont worry about them not swimming to much yet, they'll still be trying to get the hang of it

  2. HI I AM A FISH EXPERT, BABY GUPPIES WHEN THEY COME OUT EAT THEIR MOTHERS PLACENTA AND DONT EAT FOR BOUT 2-3 DAYS, AFTER THAT GIVE THEM CRUSHED TROPICAL FLAKES.

IT TAKES BOUT A 3 MONTHS BEFORE THEY ARE FULLY GROWN.

DONT WORRY BOUT SIZE THEY CAN COME OUT MINUTE AND LOVE LONG TIME =]

ITS OK TO USE A WATER FILTER, THEY SWIM AWAY FROM IT TO GET STRONGER, ITS KINDA LIKY A GYM FOR THEM =]

  3. its not necessary but it would be a good idea to buy a male and a female

  4. of course they can grow without the female. guppies don't show any parental care. the snail may eat dead little guppies only, don't worry about that...

at the age of 2 months, they will start to reproduce!

Have you ever seen a guppy releasing fry???

  5. You can by fish food for baby fish, its very fine. my mickey mouse Platys gave birth to only 4 baby's to which 2 got eaten and one died, i lost the parents soon after too. I have one baby left and is now couple months old and nearly fully grown, its a female.Your baby's should be fine in a tank on their own so good luck with them.

I cant help you with the snails because water treatment may harm the baby's. Pick what you can out and get advice from your local pet shop, that's what i would do. cheers.

  6. The fry will do better without their mum as she would have been likely to eat them.

Sometimes as a first time mum it can be quite stressful giving birth and she probably couldn't cope it does happen all the time

The babies should take a couple of months to mature but nearer a year until they are full size

The fry will try and stay close together in corners as they don't want to be eaten and the less they move the less chance there is of them being found.

the ones on the video probably have had a close up so you can see them better or they are older what you have got is the average size so they are ok

the snails shouldn't harm the fry at all  but if you want to get rid of them leave a slice of cucumber or lettuce over night and they should be attracted to it when the next day just take it out and chuck it away

and just squish them when you see them near the top of the tank

    hope this helps

  7. They will do better without the mom or big fish because they get eaten by them, yes including the mom.  Also it will tank about a month. I just had a batch of 20 2 months ago and I let them mingle with the other fish so only 2 survived to a resonable size

  8. No, don't worry snails are not gonna touch your babies, have separated tank for them with live plants

ask about it on this useful forum

  9. Starting at the beginning, the problems you have been having with the parents, more so the mothers is the way they are shipped from Singapore/Malaysia. They are starved, then drugged and over packed to compensate for losses. This does their inner workings no good.

The fry should show no such problems. Crushed flake is the recommended diet. Get a small plastic bag, add your flake then roll the bag between finger and thumb till the flake becomes dust. It's a very therapeutic pass time trust me :0) Ideally feed your fry three times per day a very small amount. The higher the protein content of the flake the faster the fry will grow. It's always displayed on the tub.

Guppy fry are a complete miniature replica of the parents, everything is on a smaller scale, but they look after themselves 3-4mm is very healthy for new born guppy fry, so you have no problem there. They will be 10-15mm in about 6 weeks, fully grown by 3 months on average.

Snails will multiply to food source, don't over feed your fry, once the little belly is full that's it. Net the adults off the sides of the tank. To begin with use air line to do your water changes so you don't suck up fry, but do suck up the jelly sacs containing snail eggs when you see them. When you can switch to a bigger gauge pipe suck up the snails aswell.

Try to keep things simple and it's easy :0)
