Hi!

My friend's daughter is 3 months old and she has had to recently start formula feeding (S26) her baby as her milk has been insufficient. The result of this is that baby has not had a p**p in 4 days!

From what she can gather, it's 'normal' and it's just that baby's body is adapting to the formula - is there any mom out there who can confirm this anyhow? Or is there something wrong?

She would love to talk to her doctor, but he's really a bit of an ....., and doesn't talk to patients over the phone - he SEES patients...

Any help would be valuable!

Thank you :)

  1. I just went through this process with my daughter, switching her from breastmilk to formula at 3 months as well.  It took her 3 days before her 1st BM and it was even real hard for her to let it happen.  She cried and fussed and pushed real hard.  It got to the point she was crying to p**p.  We ended up giving her some apple juice mixed with water and some prunes and it seemed to help, that was until today it started to happen all over again.  A baby should not go 5 days with out a BM, so I would recommened taking her to the doctor if it last's any longer.  It could be the formula she is on as well.  Good luck

  2. Don't let it go to long without out a BM (bowel movement) it can cause alot of problems.  My daughter went a couple of days when she was little and they had to dig it out manually.  It was a painful  thing to go through.  Go see the doctor , there are some things that a doctor should know that's why they insist on coming in .  They can feel their stomach and listen to see if there is a build up of fetis.

  3. it is normal for babies poo to go from normal  to a bit hard when adapting to formula but if she hasnt pooed in 4 days it seems like its a bit to hard to pass and will give her a belly ache

she is old enough to have small amounts of water (like only 20ml) between feeds to try to soften the poo up but if she hasnt had a poo in the next couple of days see your doctor

do they have maternal and child health nurses where you live as they have open days and are free to attend and very helpful

  4. Yes, babies' bowel movements change with time and formula, but four days of not doing the doo is too many, at any age!

Standard answer (as I don't know any other meds you can give at this age): a baby size glycerine suppository (1 gram dose), it'll make her do a smelly in 5-15 minutes.

  5. We never had anything that long with our children, but I do remember when we went to formula with one of the kids it was the formula with extra iron.  As soon as we switched to the regular formula, it was fine.  I'm not a doctor, but I believe too much iron will constipate them.  Good luck!

  6. Um, how would you or your friend fell if you hadn't pooped in 4 days, miserable, honey, get that baby to a doctor ASAP, poor little thing is probably in pain, she is CONSTIPATED, and she needs relief.  She can not tell you when she isn't feeling well or all systems aren't on go, so, your friend, being her Mother, and an adult, um, has to think and feel for her.  Hopefully an e***a will be all she needs, but we are talking about her digestive system here and an in an infant, this is the system that is pulling the most of the weight because it has to supply nutrition to a body that is constantly growing.  Please get the baby to the doctor, if her doctor is an a*****e, GET ANOTHER DOCTOR.  I pray all goes well.   God Bless.

  7. She needs another doctor.. But has the baby had enough water? Maybe that has something to do with it.
