Question:

Baby measuring almost a month ahead...??

I started seeing an OB when I was around 8 weeks pregnant. They did my first ultrasound when I was almost 11 weeks and said I was measuring right on time and that my due date was around October 3rd. I had another ultrasound done at 21 weeks and baby looked healthy and was still measuring on tme so he kept my due date the same. I recently changed doctors to start seeing a midwife because I wasn't happy with the care I was recieving from my OB. They wanted to do an ultrasound of their own just to check everything. I was 28 weeks 6 days when I had my 3rd ultrasound and I was measuring at 33 weeks; almost a month ahead of what I should be. Does this mean my baby is going to be big or did my old doctor mess up my measurements and due date? I wasn't sure of my LMP so I took a guess because I knew it was sometime around the end of December -(24th-26th). At my last appointment my midwife measured my belly and I was only measuring about a week of what I should be. So why does the baby measure at almost a month ahead and my belly only measures a week ahead?? Is this anything to worry about? I'm afraid I might have him sooner than I originally thought I would because he measures a month ahead...I'm currently 34 weeks 1 day.

  1. The measurements are an average. My first son was born on his due date at 10lb 8 oz.

My second son born 6 lb 7 oz 8 weeks early. He is now 4 months and weighs 12lb so don't be to worried about it at 34 weeks the lungs start to develope and any time after that everything should be fine.

welcome to motherhood. many moer worries ahead ;-)

  2. talk to your doctor about it

  3. talk to an obgyn. a lagre baby can indicate gestational diabetes, also geta glucose test done.

  4. Wow, it seems like we have mirror pregnancies! I am due 9/28 and the exact same thing happened to me - except I didn't change doctors. Just all of the sudden she measured alot bigger than before.

What I was told is that sometimes they have growth spurts and usually it evens out by the time you deliver because they slow down and catch up. At 18 weeks I was measuring a week ahead on the US, then at 32 weeks I was measuring 3 weeks ahead by US, but then only 1 week by the belly measurement. She said that was because I had more "room" in my torso so she didn't poke out as much as she would in other women....if that makes sense. In other words, she WAS measuring 3 weeks ahead, but it was hard to tell by my belly because she was in towards my back and lower.

I am currently 34 weeks 5 days and I get another ultrasound at 36 weeks to check her weight and see if we're inducing. But, in the meantime, I went back to the doc 2 days ago and she was measuring right on track again with the belly measurement. My doc is doing the US as a last peek to see exactly how big she is and will base her decision on that. However, keep in mind that US can be 1lb off in either direction because it measures certain body parts and not the whole baby. My baby has long legs and a robust chest, so she could actually weigh less than they're saying just because of that.

I wouldn't worry about it - worst case is that you have him sooner, which is a good thing! However, I would ask for another ultrasound at 36 weeks to see where you are then because they gain half a pound a week at that point. At 37 weeks they're considered full-term. My doc said that if she is at a decent weight then I'm going to be induced at 37 weeks to avoid her growing too big and having to have a c-section!  Good luck and congrats!

  5. the posibilties

    1. you might have forgot the LMP and and are worrying

    2. Baby measuring almost a month ahead, ie  "lagre baby" this might indicate gestational diabetes, ask your doctor for glucose tolrance test which is usualy done in 7th month, but can be done in 5-6 month also if doctor feels that the baby is large

THE SOLUTION IS TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR AND ASK HIM/HER TO REPET THE SCAN OR DO THE NEEDFUL

    BEST WISHES

  6. This far along in the pregnancy ultrasounds aren't that reliable for measuring age.  I think your midwife is closer to the mark.  It's better to measure the whole belly to get an idea of how far along you are.

Measuring a week more isn't a big deal either.  The baby might be bigger this week and even out next week.  It's nothing to worry about.

Good luck on a healthy and happy mommy and baby!
