Any experiences? Do you have a lot of false alarms?

  1. Nope, the baby monitor I use is fantastic, havn't had a false alarm as yet.  My son is 6 weeks old today.  I use the Angelcare sound and movement monitor.  With my previous children I used only the sound monitor, that being 6 yrs ago now as I wasn't aware of the movement monitor, but as all mothers I wanted to make sure that I did everything possible to make sure that my baby was safe while asleep.  I guess there are a few people out there that will suggest its a waste of money, but I feel that for every false alarm there must be quite a number of tiny little lives also that have been saved due to the alarm sounding when the baby stops breathing.  I purchased mine off ebay for $80AUD, so the money spent I think is well worth it.  Cheers

  2. Please... don't get one. We got one and it was great for a few weeks then it started going of. We freaked out, took her to the doctor and he was useless. We decided we'd deal with it if it went of again. It did a few days later about 3 times in one night. We took her to the hospital and the paediatrician told us to take the monitor and throw it out of the window. They are useless and instead of empowering you they freak you out even more.

We came home from the hospital and decided to relax if it went off again. It did about an hour later and I woke up turned the light on and my daughter was fine. The alarm had stopped and she was breathing... our issue at this stage was that we weren't sure if she breathing too lightly or whether she had stopped breathing for the 20 seconds it takes to make the alarm go off then starting again.

I kept using it until I actually watched it go off while she was breathing (and not lightly breathing.. just normal) and have not used it since.

That stupid monitor made my life h**l for a couple of weeks all because it kept giving us false alarms.

I know it is stressful, but over time you will check him less and less and be more comfortable with it.

If you do decide to get one, please remember not to panic if it does go off. Ours was great for three weeks before it started going off all the time... that's what freaked me out the most but it turns out that as she got bigger her chest cavitiy was further off the matress and not triggering the sensor.

So if it does go off. Go in calmly and see what is happening. We kept ripping our daughter out of the cot and it took us ages to work out whether that might have been making her breath again or whether she was breathing the whole time. Hope that makes sense.

Oh and while it is probably unnecessary to say... remind yourself right from the start that if it does go off, do not shake him to try to wake him up... it only over went off for us when she was in a really deep sleep so she seemed unresponsive when we first got her up but she was just in that "floppy" sort of sleep.

    Anyways,.. I hope that helps

Oh.. it was a Tommee Tippee brand.. biggest waste of $200

  3. I was going to get one of these for my son. He was born 12 weeks prem and was on an apnoea monitor in hospital (all babies were). There were a LOT of false alarms when nurses would come running.

I decided that if I was gonna get any sleep when he came home I wouldn't get one!

We have a Tomy lights and sound monitor which does the job perfectly and is about 3 times cheaper! We use it on the lights setting so we're not jumping up at the smallest snuffle.

    Hope this helps,

    Jo xx
