Baby nickname-cultural thing?

My husbands family is hispanic (I am white) and everyone calls our daughter "mama" or "mama's". I had never heard of this and is apprently a term of affection. I guess it shouldn't bother me but it gets on my nerves. I havn't said anything and I probably won't because I don't want to offend anyone, but my daughter has a name, use it. Does anyone else have someone that calls their child something different and what did you do or say? Does it bother you? Thanks!

  1. My husband is hispanic and my first daughter's name is Susanna Concepcion. His mom's name is Concepcion and everyone calls her Dona Concha. So of course my girl is now "Conchita". I really liked Susanna, that's why I picked it, but I got over it and now even I call my 1st daughter Concha or Conchita. My 2nd girls name is Graciela and it's kinda long, so she got the nickname "Chela". Which is okay, but the only thing is that I found out the Mexicans sometimes say chela for a beer, lol. Anyways, my husband is from Honduras not Mexico so it doesnt matter. Now I'm on #3 and it's a boy and I think we are going to name him Roberto, so he'll probably end up with the nick name "Beto". Of course, I would prefer Robbie or something like that, but oh well. "Mama" isn't bad at all, so I wouldn't worry about it. Once she is old enough, let her know what her name is, so she can start distinguishing between nick name and real names. My 1st daughter is now 3 and she knows her name is Susanna, but we call her "Conchita"

  2. I'm black and we give all our kids nicknames. It's funny cause i forget the kids' real names. LOL it's just a sign of affection.

  3. Im hispanic and lol..yea i think almost every family uses that at some point. my brothers name is Gooey..like MR. Mago. he was so fat and his eyes were so squinted he looked like him.. my sister is TITI , i got her that one we are two years apart and her name was so long its Christine and i used to pronounce it TITINE! so titi stuck with the WHOLE FAMILY even her Husband super funny. My cousin we call popsy as in papas all the baby girls we call mamas at some point. its normal her name with come in eventually. just let it go i think ur overreacting just a little! its her family they love her and thats all that counts.

I also have a niece and we call her gordas cuz shes chunky shes only 1 1/2 she even calls me ekas! for erica

  4. I'm hispanic and i have a daughter and i call her mami...and my family calls her all different types of names like "mamasita" or "mama"...(her name is Adelaide)its not really anything bad and im sure that if you let your family know that you dont like it they will "probably" stop, or tell your husband, but its nothing bad really thats how u usually call little kids that really cute and u love them :), an dit doenst bother me when they call those names to my daughter ill get pissed if it was something BAD....or insulting....Good Luck..:)
