Question:

Baby proofing...?

In our efforts to start baby proofing our home now that our little one is walking, my husband and I have run into a snag. We have a wrought iron railing staircase with decorative scroll designs throughout them. They run up our staircase as well as cover our two story foyer and our two story family room. My fear is that my daughter will figure out how to use the scroll designs on the railings as a step. I fear she will climb them and fall over the top. Has anyone seen a product that covers the railings completely or has run into a solution to cover them so that their children can not climb them. I would also like to prevent her being able to toss toys through it or anything that will spark her curiosity and draw her into going near them. Thanks!

  1. Home Depot sells this hard plastic netting (1cm squares) that you could zip tie to the railing.  If you line it up nicely and use matching coloured zip ties and trim the ends, it actually still looks ok but keeps little ones from climbing or practising their aim with toys!

  2. they have these plastic covers you can put up along the railing. Its almost like a plastic vvall, it keeps them from being able to go through the bars, climb, or through things through them. I'm not sure exactly vvhere you can buy them but you could check target or babies r us or something.

  3. My parents never baby proofed our home.  My brother and I survived.  They called it supervision.  In fact, all of my family members, immediate and extended, use this technique and it works quite well.

  4. Install plexiglas, flexible plastic shield, or netting across railings where baby might squeeze body parts through (> 3-1/2 inches).

    This stuff works great:

KidKusion KidSafe Deck Guard or Kidkusion Kid Safe Banister Guard. You can find the places that sell it on Amazon.

Hope this helps! Good luck, I know what you are going through... I have a 21 month old adventurous daughter!
