Baby skunks living in bush in front of the house?

There are a least 2, maybe 3 baby skunks living in a bush right outside our front door. We live right in town, and although it's not a huge town, we live right on the main street. I'd say there's maybe 20 feet between the bush and the road, and about 8 feet between the bush and the sidewalk. I haven't seen a big skunk (mommy or daddy) around at all. I'm scared A. they're going to get run over. B. someone's going to come walking down the sidewalk at night and the skunks will spray them. C. I'm going to go out my front door and scare them and get sprayed. If I go out and see them they turn arounf and hiss at me, so i go back in and go out through the basement. But anyway. I don't know what to do about these little buggers!! What do you suggest? Also, can baby skunks spray you? These guys are about the size of a 3 month old kitten.

  1. Last Thanksgiving we had a skunk family taking up residence under my front porch!  EEK!!  We live 3 houses down from the main street in our city.  We called the local animal control, and they came out and set a cage trap for it.  We didn't want to actually catch it on Thanksgiving with all the family there, so we put the cage in the garage.  Well, the door must have been slightly open because later that day there was a skunk in the trap....in the garage!!

Anyway, call animal control and they can help you out!  Also, moth balls have been said to keep skunks away.  Just toss some under the bush and anywhere else they might be hiding and see if that helps.

  2. I'm sure Mommy Skunk is around somewhere.  I doubt if the Humane Society will be much help and they will refer you to either the Wildlife Management, Game Commission or even Animal Control people.

If you just want the little buggers to move on, toss a couple of ammonia soaked rags in the bush about dusk.  They will leave; skunks do not like the smell of ammonia.  I'd bet Mommy Skunk had them under your porch to begin with.

  3. They can spray you but I wouldn't really worry about it. The best course of action is to wait them out. They'll disperse as soon as they're old enough to leave. It only takes a few months.

  4. Try spreading coffee grounds around the bush, it works for cats to stop them from digging.

  5. Have them live trapped and taken away. The Humane Society should be able to help you with this.
