Baby starting to get constipated?

My baby is 6 months and for the past couple of days he's been really trying hard to have a p**p. Before that his p**p has been really thick. I'm going to pick up some baby prune food to put in his cereal this morning to kind of help balance. We've been giving him rice cereal for the past 2 months and he was fine with it. We just started pea's and carrots this week and since then his p**p is getting almost two thick? Is his body not reacting well to the veggies?

  1. You might find that your baby will have bouts of constipation as his little digestive system gets used to new foods. If he's constipated, avoid banana and baby rice cereal as this can cause constipation. It's worth noting that foods high in fibre won't help relieve his constipation as it does in adults so avoid these foods as well. When he's got constipation, give him plenty of extra fluids, this should help to relieve it. If it persists and he is struggling to poo for days on end, see your doctor.

  2. Um, peas are a very fiborous food, you need to make sure if you feed your son peas to give him extra liquid. Thick poo isn't a problem, when he poo's rabbit pellets (little balls of poo) then he is constipated. Back off on the peas a little and up his fluid intake a little too. Only use the prune food when your baby is constipated, sometimes a thick poo can just pass and the others can be completely normal.

  3. be happy hes consipated and not stinking up the house sister

  4. Is he getting enough fluids? Chances are he may be getting full with the food and not taking in enough fluids which he needs to soften the stool and help it pass. Try giving him some water or juice at meal times. If the problem persists contact you doctor who may be able to prescibe Lactulose which helps to make his pooh softer and get things back on track..

  5. Hospitals use the B.R.A.T diet when someone has diarrhea...that's bananas, rice, applesauce and toast.  So when someone is constipated they should avoid these items.  Also, your baby's system is adjusting.  Prunes are fine to give them and will definitely do the trick...my girl eats prunes every so often and not just to relieve constipation.  Pears, peaches/nectarines and plums are also good to get things moving.  Peas are fine and so are carrots...just take things slowly and remember to not slow down on their formula/breastmilk....this is their liquid intake.  You don't really need to give them water but if you want to just don't over do it...formula/breastmilk is a better choice.

As far as cereal, introduce oatmeal or another higher in fiber cereal...we've eliminated the rice altogether.

Good luck and if it doesn't get better with the prunes (which it most likely will) then see a doc!

  6. This is very normal. Your baby is simply not used to these things yet. There are three things I think you could try.

    1. Prunes, pears, apricots and ripe bananas can be particularly good at relieving constipation. Try the prunce juice in his cereal. If this doesn't work after a couple of days try a little pureed banana.

    2. Try lying your baby on his back and cycling his legs in the air - this can help to stimulate the digestive tract.

    3. Massage your baby's stomach in a clockwise motion - this can be done while baby is in a warm bath or using lotion or oil to lubricate the skin as this helps to both relax baby and get digestion moving.

    I hope this helps.

  7. I'd avoid peas until he is older. I tried them with my daughter when she was about 8 months and they gave her lots of wind and tummy pain. Sweetcorn had the same effect.

Once she was 12 months old her digestive system was mature enough to cope with them.

Good early foods to try are: pureed pear, apple, carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato, potato, zucchini, broccoli and cauliflower and mashed b banana and avocado.

  8. This is a transitional thing, he's getting used to the new food.

Make sure he's hydrated, yes, but if he has 3 or 4 days where he can't do a smelly put a glycerine suppository in him.

  9. it could be that his body is adjusting to this new food. first, you should always try one food at a time. so peas and carrots in the same week is too much.

go back to rice for a few days, and then do carrot alone...and then after some days peas alone...so you'll know which is the culprit!!

also, if you're give him baby's camomile stop. it makes him wee a lot, and then his p**p is dry. prune food in his cereal is good. also makes sure he drinks water. leave it handy. my son loves water, because i gave it to him since he was a baby - now he's 5 and won't change it for anything!

if your baby continues like this, you could get some over-the-counter gel, but don't use it often - because babies get used to it, and won't p**p without it.
