Question:

Baby won't take cow's milk from sippy?

Hello,

My daughter will be 1 year old on Sunday and we've gotten the go-ahead to try and give her cow's milk. Problem is: she won't have anything to do with it. She'll take a sippy with juice/water, but one sip of the milk and she'll just leave her mouth open and milk flows out. :) She still takes boob in the morning and evening and formula during the day with her nanny. Does anyone have any tips on helping get her off the bottle/formula and onto milk in a sippy? I think she just doesn't like the taste of the cow's milk, since temperature-wise, the milk is same as the juice/water. She takes yogurt and cheese fine.

Thanks a bunch!

  1. Try a different kind of cup, maybe with a straw. Maybe add it to her cereal. Or let her drink with no lid while you hold the cup. Give it time. Try a little at a time.

  2. A baby this old doesn't exactly need milk any longer if she's refusing to drink it -- and ESPECIALLY NOT cow's milk.

If anything, I'd say you should try to gradually wean her down off of her formula -- make half a bottle for each of her servings, instead of a whole one - then cut one serving out per day, etc.. until you get down to nothing.

However, increase her cheeses and yogurts and any other source of calcium possible (orange juice, fortified juices and cereals, etc).

I would personally still be offering BREAST MILK though.. Its perfectly healthy and beneficial for children to drink breast milk until they cut their permanent teeth and loose their milk teeth (which is usually around age 5-6).

But regardless of what you decide, children NEVER need to drink cow's milk. Ever. Calcium is found in many other items of food and drink besides animals..

  3. "but one sip of the milk and she'll just leave her mouth open and milk flows out."

haha that's funny, made me laugh!  Anyways maybe try warming it up for her, I am not sure what else you could do.  Sorry I'm not much help.

  4. Exactly what Alyssa's Mommy said! =]

    ... it works! =]

  5. warm the cow milk just like you do the formula, my Madie wont take cold milk either, has to be warm.

  6. Start by mixing the formula with the milk, 25% milk, 75% formula. Then 50 50 then 75 25, then completely on cow's milk. You should do it this way anyway, because changing will most likely upset her stomach. My son was severely constipated when we switched him, but he got through it.

  7. My 21 month old son never did take to the taste of cow's milk.  He loves vanilla soy milk though, I think because its sweeter.  Its healthier than cow's milk anyway, and my pediatrician says its fine to just go with the soy milk.

  8. Gradual switch over. 3 parts formula to 1 part milk... then half and half... then just keep putting less formula till it is all milk... do this over the course of a couple weeks. You can't rush into it with most kids.

  9. She won't want cow's milk if she's got breast milk still. Breast milk is better for her and cow's milk tastes disgusting to a child used to breast milk.
