Baby wont eat from spoon

Does anyone have any ideas as our 8 month old little baby boy doesn't like eating from the spoon?

He doesn't fancy opening his mouth, so it's a case of trying to distract him to eat which takes a while.

He's definitely not teething and doesn't mind finger food or eating things like banana pieces from our hands.

Pain in the bum. ;-)

doesn't mind water from a cup either, so he's just fussy about feeding from a spoon

  1. Use two spoons.  Give him one and use the other yourself.  He will feel differently about the spoon when he's holding it himself.  He will try to feed himself, and at first most of it will end up in his ear (he'll turn his head to look at you but keep going with the spoon - it's hilarious) but in the end he'll be feeding himself.

  2. might not be ready - take your time

he'll get used to it - just dont force him if he doesnt want it

  3. Hi which type of spoon are you using, you can get ones with a soft tip for first starting off eating , I would just say keep trying .

  4. Be patient and keep trying...at least he's eating finger foods so just keep feeding him those in the interim.  maybe he'd like to hold the spoon himself and try...I give my girl her own spoon to hold while I feed her.

  5. Try a baby plastic spoon, very often they don't like the coldness of a metal one. If that dosnt work wait. He will do it in his own time.

Frustrating I know but not worth the battle.

  6. i have already gone thru this phase...so be patient, its just a phase which vill pass..so until then give him finger foods altho at times it gets too messy without a spoon but what is more impt that ur baby should eat.. with a spoon or without it....im still having trouble feeding my 14 month old daughter..have to distract her like h**l which is quite frustrating at times....

  7. When I started my daughter on the spoon, I put a little bit of formula on it for her. She was resistant at first but then she got over it and opens her mouth as soon as she sees any spoon. Otherwise, you could try like a baby safe feeder so that the baby can just eat whole fruits and vegetables. You could also bring it up at your next appointment.

  8. try chop sticks

  9. Give baby a spoon to play with when not at meal times,,, he will instinctively put the spoon in his mouth and bite on it when he is used to playing with a spoon he will know there is nothing to worry about and hopefully start eating from the spoon himself

    worth a try for nothing

    good luck

  10. If he eats with his fingers, just let him do that. Dont try and force the spoon as you will onyl send him in the other direction.

Our daughter was just the same, we just let her do it her way and now she will use a spoon herself just fine.

  11. my daughter went through a phase like this around 8mos. i uused to put the beaker to her mouth like i was giving her a drink, when she opened her mouth, id put the spoon in.

or id make her laugh to open her mouth, then slip the spoon in. she came out of it and it only lasted a few days.

if you are concerned he isnt eating enough, try finger foods too, chopped fruit, veg, biscuits etc.
