Question:

Baby wont take breast milk from bottle or sippy cup?

She's 8 months old. She took breast milk from a bottle for 2 weeks with no problem, but recently she is rejecting it. She will not take previously frozen or refrigerated breast milk from the bottle even warmed up nicely. She wont take it cold either. She nurses just fine. I pumped and immediately gave her the bottle and she took it with some coaxing. So it seems like if it's fresh she'll take it. Then today I attempted to give her some in a sippy cup without the valve and she wouldn't take it but I put 1/2 oz of apple juice and she took it just fine.. ugh.. Any advice would be great.

  1. I don't have any advice, but kellymom.com is a great site for breastfeeding issues.

  2. well sounded like you have a smart girl. She want her milk fresh. If i was her i would do the same thing. i will take titty over bottle or cups lol

  3. She wants what she's used to.  Just keep offering it to her in a bottle or cup.  My nephew is going through the same thing.  They're trying to ween him from the bottle and he doesn't want his milk in anything else.  When he sees that the cup is the only way he's going to get it, he will finally give in and drink it.

  4. My daughter did the same thing.  I found that if I distracted her while she was drinking, she would take it easier.  Is she able to hold her bottle or sippy cup by herself?  Taking my daughter for walks and giving her the bottle always worked for me, she would be finished the whole thing by the time we were done walking.  This was a baby that absolutely refused to take a bottle, but every time we went for a walk she would finish it.

Good luck with whatever method you try!

  5. My son wouldn't take a bottle either, wouldn't drink breast milk from a sippy cup.  I tried so many different bottles, then I got tired of pumping, heating the milk up, and him rejecting it.

I stay home with him, so it really didn't matter much.  Now he's completely weaned and almost 14 months.  If you stay home, relax, soon she won't be needing to nurse as much (they start eating more and more solid foods, and nursing less and less).  As long as she's drinking other things from a bottle or sippy cup she's fine.  You don't have much longer, and once they're done, they're done (breastfeeding that is).  Try to relax and enjoy it now -- they grow up fast!!

  6. she may still want to be on the breast because she is used to it, and as far as the apple juice, that is her way of telling you that she is ready for something else now...once a child is 6 months of age then you can give them cows milk...so try and warm some up and give it to her and see what she does.
