  2. They were equivalent ways of representing the originally Indian symbol for zero.  My keyboard can't cope with them, as it happens.  If I remember correctly, the Babylonian one was actually a space.

  4. Babyonian did not have a real number zero (the integer before 1) but used a space as a placeholder when needed.

    The greek philosophers denied the existence of zero, saying 'How can nothing be something?'

    The mayans used a symbol, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:MAYA-... as a symbol for zero in dates.
