I babysit a 2 year old and his brothers every weekday for the summer. I am trying to get the 2 year old to call me by my name... because whenever he tries to get my attention he calls me mom. Ive only been babysitting for 2 weeks and i try to use my name as much as possible when i talk to him. He knows how to say it, he just doesnt relate that it is my name.

Also, whenever he wants a snack and he cant get it, he screams his head off. He usually does this like 5 min after he just had a meal or a snack. His parents said he does it all the time but how can i get him to stop(other than give in cuz i dont do that)

  1. Beat that kid with in an inch of his life..that seems to be popular with babysitters nowadays!

Ok, smart alic comments aside he probably sees all female figures that stay at his house as mom, which to him probably just means mom. It's something he'll have to grow out of and learn, it can't really be forced on him. And as far as the screaming, some sort of light punishment will teach him that behaviors not acceptable. Put him in the corner, or another classic you might like. He'll cry, but that's natural and avoidable, but eventually he'll get that screaming for those reasons aren't acceptable.

  2. When he is asking for something have him say your name to you to get what he wants.  You can also color pictures with him of you, him, pets and make a little story.  Then when reading the story or going back over the pictures have him say the names.

I usually tell my child before he eats the last snack, that it's the last one...I say, "All done after this one. No more yum, yum's."  If he throws a fit and wants more, I just tell him this again and lead him out of the kitchen to play.  Usually if I get down on the floor and pull out a toy he likes playing with, it makes him forget.

  3. sounds like a perfectly normal 2 yr old to me.

  4. Berrel got it right - give her the 10 points  :)

  5. Refer to yourself by your name. Instead of saying, "I'll get you a drink," say, "Sally (or whatever your name is) will get you a drink."

As for the snack, just keep telling him no, the screaming will get better with time.

  6. He just want to get attention from you. If you just ignore him, he'll realize that is not the way to get your attention and stop screaming.
