  1. If your friend that told you this either has a bachelor's degree or has accomplished a fine career without one then you might want to listen to what he has to say.

If this friend has neither a degree nor a great paying job then he's not someone you want to take advise from regarding either.

    ☺

Want to have a really hard time finding a job?  Go job shopping with no degree.  About 1:3 people in the US have one now, do you want to be the 1 that has one or the 2 that don't?

  2. If I told my friends so then I would probably lose them, but yes, I'm afraid an Arts Degree is worthy very little.

To put it into perspective... I've seen people with Arts degrees draw absolutely pre-school level, yet a person with no degree whatsoever could draw like Picasso and get the job. It comes down to practice and it isn't something you can really teach - a lot of good artists feel stifled by teachers and pick different subjects instead.

    Good news, however!

I used to love art as well as video games, so I was considering Swinburne University (Melbourne, Australia) which offers an Arts degree in video games course, which is basically concept art for video games:

Bachelor of Arts (Games and Interactivity)

    http://www2.swinburne.edu.au/lss/courses...

To be bluntly honest, if you like IT or computers, you should do this course, which is basically the same but with an extra year tacked on which teaches you programming.

Bachelor of Multimedia (Games and Interactivity) / Bachelor of Science (Computer Science and Software Engineering)

    http://courses.swinburne.edu.au/Courses/...

That would put you on a higher shelf than people with just an arts degree.

Good luck, you can contact me on chupa-thingy@hotmail.com if you have any questions, I'll try and help you if I can. But yes, I strongly suggest getting a degree besides Art, since it is extremely competitive and you only have to look at Deviant art to find thousands of able and willing experts. I suggest Multimedia, IT or Business.

Oh one more thing! If you REALLY like art and are willing to take the step, both Swinburne and Monash (I'm pretty sure Monash does) offer a course called Product Design Engineering.

It's basically VCD (Visual Communication and Design, drawing and such) crossed with a bit of brain work. Swinburne Open Day Aug 17th 2008, check it out if you're based in Australia, or look around in Unis near you that provide similar options!

    Goodluck :D
