Bachinger/Moser struggle past Harrison/Young into second round – Atlanta Tennis Championships 2011
Unseeded German duo of Matthias Bachinger and Frank Moser stood victorious against the American pair of Ryan Harrison and Donald Young in the opening round of Atlanta Tennis Championships Doubles, on Wednesday.
Being played on the hard courts of Atlanta, the United States, the German team exhibited a brilliant display of quality tennis under extreme pressure situations to come out as the winner in three sets. The matchup lasted for one
hour and thirty seven minutes before settling at 4-6, 7-6(3), 10-6, ending in the favour of Bachinger and Moser.
The contest ended in the dismay of local crowd with the local duo suffering a defeat to end its voyage at the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 tournament. Harrison and Young took hold of the contest early
by clinching the opener early but lost their steam in the later two sets to let the Germans away with victory.
Harrison and Young were off to a flyer in the opening set and reeled off 10 out of 12 first serve points to get the better of their opponents early. The Americans drew first blood by breaking the German serve in the third game
to lead 2-1 but Bachinger and Moser retaliated immediately to backfire at them, levelling the scores at 4-4. Six costly double faults from the Germans assisted their opponents to crack in another serve break to seal the opener at 6-4, getting into a one-set
lead in the contest.
Tide turned in the following set with the German competitors straining hard to make their way back in the game. Bachinger and Moser secured 18 out of 23 first serve points in the second set and stung one serve break to lead 5-3
in the second set. Harrison and Young made their way back in the set with a timely serve break and then held their serve to level the scores at 6-6. A tie breaker was enforced in the game and the American contestants coughed out a number of unforced errors
to let Bachinger and Moser away with the second at 7-6(3).
The Germans carried on their winning momentum in the decisive set as well and a couple of mini-breaks let them conclude victory at 10-6, sending them in to the quarter-finals of Atlanta Tennis Championships. They will play against
the wildcard American duo of Drake Bernstein and Kevin King, who made a huge upset in the opening round by disposing off the top seeded pair of Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram from the tournament.
