Back down in distance, Ulis De Vassy set to tackle big names in Racing Welfare Fox-Pitt Eventing Handicap Hurdle at Wincanton
Thursday’s Racing Welfare Fox-Pitt Eventing Handicap Hurdle (Jockey Club Grass Roots Series Qualifier) is a very competitive affair. A dozen high-quality horses have entered the meeting, pursuing a handy prize of £4,549. The going is soft for the 2-mile
contest, which is scheduled to begin at 14:40 GMT.
Both, Top Wood and Notarfbad are making plenty of appeal, but having a lot to prove on testing surface. The former of the two looked rusty on his seasonal comeback when finishing 16th in the field of 21.
The 5-year-old showed great progress in the previous two seasons, and deserves respect on that form. Prior to his summer break, the David Pipe-trained sealed a comfortable win at Chepstow.
Notarfbad looked good on his previous start at Taunton. The 6-year-old was short of confidence after suffering a humiliating loss on his seasonal comeback. But he turned things around quite nicely, securing the second place behind Dormouse in mid November.
Quaddick Lake also has a big role to play. The Jeremy Scott-trained is showing great consistency for the new stable. Prior to his fresh success at Taunton, the 9-year-old sealed the runner-up place on three consecutive occasions.
Kings Flagship is another to consider. The 7-year-old is out to show that his 66-1 course victory was not just a stroke of luck. The Chris Down-trained is flushed with pride following his maiden success, and could make things very tricky for the rest.
All the aforementioned horses have things in favour one way or another. But the vote goes to Ulis De Vassy, whose return to shorter might help him confirm the promise of Bangor success.
The Nick Williams-trained did a great job by beating Mentalist by one and a half lengths last season. The 4-year-old looked unimpressive on his previous two starts, but he still stays among the main players today.
There are several dangerous horses in the pack, thus a thrilling contest is on the cards. Since the ground is testing, the runners need to be really careful with their approach. Even a minor error could prove expensive under these circumstances.
