Back home, Yu Darvish talks about the future – MLB News
More than 10,000 people turned out on Tuesday, January 24 at Sapporo Dome to listen to their favourite Yu Darvish after his return from the United States. Signing a six-year contract, Yu Darvish is one of the resplendent Japanese names to make his way into
Major League Baseball in the United States.
While this further adds to the growing popularity of the game, it also renews interest of the Japanese fans in the game. Yu Darvish is excited by the prospect of pitching against the best hitters in the world.
However, Darvish offered something that, at best, can be called somewhat revealing. He said it had become difficult for him to stay motivated in Japan and that is why he wanted to find a new environment where he can fight new battles.
"I want to feel the thrill of pitching against the world's best hitters," Darvish said, according to the Kyodo News Service. "It was becoming harder to stay motivated in Japan. I used to feel that Japan provided the best environment for me. But I came to
believe that I needed to change that environment and move to the Majors. As a baseball player, I wanted to fight real battles."
There is no denial now that Major League Baseball provides that environment. Yu Darvish did also sound somewhat like he is complaining in the press conference. He stated that he felt the Japanese baseball was looked down upon in the United States.
"Japanese players are not thought of as highly as they used to be," Darvish said. "I didn't like the idea that Japanese baseball was looked down upon in the United States.”
Also, having made some observations in the United States after all these years, Yu Darvish vows to be the world’s Number one pitcher. His job, as he puts it, is to dominate the rival hitters.
With an ERA of 1.72, this pitcher has all the potential to realise the dreams that he has. Having a tremendous record, the Japanese player, with his enviably adept skills, is all set to wreck havoc on any offence in the Major League.
