  1. Also because the Civic of today weighs a lot more.  Back in 1977 cars didn't have airbags, ABS, etc. which all add weight, not to mention that meeting today's crash test standards probably necessitates that the car be heavier.


  2. That was probably a 650 cvcc -- it had a 650 cc engine in it.  Great for gas mileage, but takes forever to accelerate to 60 mph.

    If you want to get great mileage out of a 650cc engine today, and accelerate reasonably, get a motorcycle.

    You probably remember the Subaru commercials, which claimed 66 mpg.  That car, in addition to being dinky itself, had a very small engine.
