Back injury rules Xavier Doherty out of England series
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s injury list continues to expand as their left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty became the latest to join the sidelines with a back injury.
“Xavier Doherty developed some back pain during the one-day game in Adelaide on Australia Day and did not train in Brisbane, which allowed his symptoms to improve,” read a team statement from physiotherapist http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alex-Kountouris-c43123 on Wednesday.
The off-spinner has been ruled out of the remainder of the series against England after he complained of a renewed back pain in training ahead of sixth One-day in Sydney.
“He attempted some light training yesterday in Sydney and his back was again painful. As such he is unavailable for the remaining two games of this series,” Kountouris said.
Alex said that Doherty is being monitored and his return to the game would be determined after looking at his speed of recovery.
28-year-old Doherty was called into the squad after Nathan Hauritz suffered a dislocated shoulder during the third One-day International of the ongoing series against England in Hobart. He was being viewed as the likely World Cup replacement
if Hauritz failed to recover in time for the mega event.
But Doherty could play only two matches before a backache ruled him out of the Brisbane match, leaving responsibility of the spin department on Steven Smith’s shoulders, who performed the role with reasonable success.
Australian selectors have not yet decided whether to bring in a spinner for Doherty for the series’ finale in Perth. It is expected that they would not call in another spinner as the Perth track supports fast bowlers.
The hosts have had a growing injury list during the limited-over series against England, with Michael Hussey battling a hamstring which he suffered in the series opener in Melbourne while Hauritz dislocated his shoulder in the third
ODI. Shaun Marsh, who was called in for Hussey, suffered a hamstring injury which ruled him out of the rest of the series making selectors call Callum Ferguson for the Sydney and Perth games.
The regular Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who had broken little finger of his left hand during the 2010-11 Ashes series, is on fast track to recovery. He had his first training session on Tuesday since having a surgery on the broken
finger.
“As part of his recovery this was a restricted session and he is expected to increase his training intensity in the lead up to the ICC Cricket World Cup. He has had no adverse effect from yesterday's session and has trained again today
during Australia's batting innings,” told the team physio.
