Back-up shuttlers have shown improvement, says World Number One Lee Chong Wei – Badminton news
Malaysia’s most celebrated ace shuttler, Lee Chong Wei, who is also the reigning World Number One, says that Men’s Singles back-up shuttlers have shown improvement in the recent international tournaments.
The World Number One expressed that many upcoming shuttlers in the singles category are improving in all departments of the game, which is a good sign for the country.
Chong Wei will participate in the National Grand Prix Finals, which will take place in Bukit Kiara from October 12-15. The top seed has already won the title for nine consecutive times and is ready to make it perfect 10 by winning the Men’s Singles title
in this event, which will be his last domestic tournament.
Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, Chan Kwong Beng, Liew Daren, Goh Soon Huat and Chong Wei Feng are the emerging shuttlers of Malaysia in the Men’s Singles category. All these shuttlers are participating in the National GP Finals to put up strong show against the defending
champion.
While indicating the fact that it will be his last participation in the local event, Chong Wei said that the back-up players only have this last chance to beat him.
Chong Wei also appreciated the performance of back-up shuttlers in the recent open events.
He said, “I have noticed that some of our back-up players have shown improvement in the last few Open tournaments. Liew Daren defeated Simon Santoso while Chan Kwong Beng upset Sony Dwi Kuncoro at the Indonesia Grand Prix Gold.”
He also added, “They must build on this confidence and persevere on. The BAM (Badminton Association of Malaysia) are giving these back-up players more opportunities to compete now. So, they must take their chances well.”
Chong Wei, who is at the peak of his professional career, wants the second strength of Malaysia to become more competent and strong. Currently, besides Chong Wei, there is no Malaysian shuttler who possesses the ability to beat the big guns of the world.
The top seed wants them to gain the highest level of skill by working extra hard and showing commitment and dedication in training sessions.
