Okay so I'm a cheerleader. And my problem is that I can't do a backbend. I'm not exactly what you call "flexible". So can I please have some tips or advice? Thanks!

  1. -sigh- this is why cheerleaders need to know dance and gymnastics. anyway, stretch ur back, do a buncha bridge kick-overs, and then give it a shot

  2. umm...well....have 2 people you trust like ur mom and bff stand on their knees beside you with their arms out. lean backwards with your hands back. squat your knees slightly while doing this. until you reach the ground. before you do the leaning back part get on the ground with your elbows to the celing and your hands and feet planted on the ground. have someone by you while doing this too. and push up arching your back as your main support and push with your arms and legs

  3. im a level 7 gymnast.... so i know what im talkin about.  Keep working on your bridges everyday, and stretch out ur back.  You should sign up for a beginers gymnastics class.  Good luck(:

  4. okay first of all not all cheerleaders should know dance and gymnastics, maybe shes just starting out or hasnt needed to know. plus, cheerleaders can learn that stuff. anyway, its really not as hard as it seems. try using something such as a chair (haha) to try and bend over. once you get that, get someone to help you learn to kick over. if you have questions, email me.     miss_b2020@yahoo.com

  5. omg so know what you mean.

I pretty much have my full and still cant do one.

  6. I was a cheerleader for 14 years, including at the collegiate level. I was also a cheer instructor for a cheer company and a coach. And after all this, I'm still not super-flexible so do not fear! Yes, some stunts do require a lot of flexibility but being a cheerleader does not necessarily mean that you are made of rubber.

If you want to work on your backbend, start out with push-up backbends from the floor. Lay on your back and put your hands on the ground right by your head. Put your feet flat on the ground and push up from there. You don't try to stand up right away- lowering yourself back down to the ground works. Do this several times until your back feels stretched and you are comfortable in this position.

You can start from a push-up and work on standing up from there. Push off with your arms and kind of rock yourself forward. End with your arms in the air because that momentum helps you get up.

Begin standing up once you are comfortable. Stand with your feet apart and hands in the air. Then, slowly bend over backwards and look for the ground. The key here is to look for the ground so you don't fall on your head. Have someone spot your back so you get the arch as you bend backwards.

With these tips, you should be able to work on getting a backbend. But remember, you don't need to be the most flexible person in the world to be a cheerleader. Be safe and have fun!
