Question:

Background check for adoptions?

I went down to the sheriff's office, did my fingerprinting, dropped off the sealed envelope at my lawyer's office, who was then suppose to mail it to state capitol for further background check other than our town. It's been awhile and still nothing!!! she said it can take up to 6 months!!!! I find this hard to believe. Should I have my background check redone? What is the cost? I only paid $5 for the county's fingerprints. Any information will be great

  1. Sometimes it can take a long time to do the background checks it depends on how backed up the state offices are. Now with more and more companies and government offices requireing the fingerprints and background checks it can take a long time.  I would call and ask for an updated and how long it has taken the lawyers other clinets to get it done so that your have some idear of how long the wait can be.

  2. It's never a bad idea to double up... just in case.

Our agency sent off for a report from the "child abuse reporting agency" clearing us ... which is now required by our state.

I also sent my own Express and sent it with a return Express envelope. Mine came back 2 months sooner than the group list they sent in.

    Good luck

  3. I had 2 sets of prints done.  One was for the State and the other Federal.  I sent the federal by USPS "express" and included another "express" envelope for them to send my clearance back to me direct.  I got it back within 3 weeks.  The State took only 1 week.   Those clearances were sent to my Agency direct.  I am in IL
