Backpack Cats, Why??????????????????????

Question

I have 3 cats, Franz, Maddie and Ari. Maddie and Ari love to sleep on my two backpacks. One backpack is a bit padded the other is corduroy. At first I thought it was all about comfort, but the corduroy backpack is pretty hard and I have loads of pillows all over the house that are more comfy. I can't put the backpacks down for a minute and they run for it, ignoring any pillow. Franz looks at them as if they have lost it. Just what is the fascination?

This is obviously not an important question just a curious cat question.

i think its the smell of the backpack....maybe you went somewhere & you caught smell of something that your cats like.

hahah thats funny! I guess it depends on cats preferences, they have weird ones. My cat always looks at me like I'm insane and shes bored with me. My friends cat did that once. I was at her house and then I see her cat sleeping half in/half out of my backpack that wasn't even comfortable. Cats can be funny like that sometimes.

The backpacks have been used by you and have your scent......it is comforting to them.

I recently acquired a kitten.  After a few days, it wouldn't sleep so I put an old shirt of mine in the box and she has been very good at sleeping overnight.

I have a cat, Jude, who does something similar. I think it's your cats' way of showing that they own you -- and by extension, everything that you own :) By sleeping on your bags, they have "claimed" them. Also, cats are super intelligent, so if you tend to use these bags a lot and then leave for the day or whatever, your cats may have caught on to this. It could be their way of trying to prevent you from going anywhere without them in tow.
