  1. Staying in youth hostels, budget $40 per day in Mexico City and resort areas, $30 in small towns in Central Mexico, and $20 in the South.

Where should you go?  Mexico City, Guadalajara, Oaxaca, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Taxco, Merida, Palenque, and any of Mexico's excellent beaches.

Where not to go?  Cancun or Cozumel (go to Playa del Carmen instead if you're in that area).  Tijuana or Juarez.

Is it safe?  Mostly.  The small towns and resort areas are mostly very safe.  There are definitely dangerous parts of the larger cities, but the city centers and tourist areas are well policed and safe during daytime.  You should take taxis at night in Mexico City or Guadalajara - make sure you have your hotel or a restaurant or bar call the taxi and don't hail taxis on the street.  You should wear a "money belt" and never leave your stuff unattended even for a minute.  I don't want to exaggerate the risks, and the vast majority of visitors have no problem at all.  But by being prepared you vastly reduce the dangers.

  4. I love backpacking and I have done a lot of it. However, backpacking in Mexico, eventhough it would be exciting and adventurous can be extremly dangerous.  I highly suggest you go with someone other than yourself. Tourist's is Mexico's number one source of income, they know people who are not from there have money that they do not. If you were to go by yourself, you will be considered vulnerable and may get yourself in a very dangerous situation. Two people is alot more intimidating than one. You will get hassled alot to buy their cheap gifts and souvenirs. Try and learn some spanish if you do not know any already, you will be able to communicate better with the locals, eventhough alot of the country speaks english. I would suggest going to Puerta Vallarta.  It's my favorite place in Mexico, it has beautiful beaches and beautiful lush trees. It's very jungly in alot of parts. The weather is fantastic, always warm, very humid (I like humidity) and rainy at times. It's a gorgeous place though. To go backpacking for a month money wise, it all depends on how much or how little you spend. You can spend as little as $500 or as much as $5,000 all depending on your budget. The flight over however will cost about $1,200 depending on when you fly, what airline and how much time in between your departure date.  I would suggest snorkeling, visiting all the old buidlings, really pay attention to the culture, enjoy the food.  You will have a blast, just be smart about where you go, who you talk to and make sure you keep your things with you at all times. Have fun!

  5. At least 18 years old....And don't do it alone, see if a buddy will go with you.

  6. Lots more Europeans backpack around Mexico.  Most North Americans think they have to stay in the antiseptic hotels and not mix with the rest of Mexico.  You can find some very cheap hotels if you avoid the touristy areas.  Check out the book:

    Fodor's Mexico 2008

Read it and you'll find places where you'll say, "I've just got to see that."

  7. I definitely would not go to Mexico even if I stayed in a 10 Star hotel.........it is way too dangerous now with the drug and turf wars going on.

Too many foreigners are being kidnapped...robbed....raped.....disappea... murdered.  There are many cities in Mexico where the police of the town are just walking off of the job and disappearing or being murdered.........

Check out Puerto Rico for backpacking......at least the USA has some control over it......

If you insist on going check with the American Consulate before going.

  8. Crazy idea.  Get your life insurance and will up to date before you go.

  9. I'm from Mexico and it would be better if you dont come alone. I wont say is not safe, cause in my 23 years I have never been robbed...

    Places:

Mexico City: that city might be dangerous even for a local, so you must know what places are you going to visit so you dont wander around. You can visit "El Palacio de Chapultepec", "Palacio de Bellas Artes", Teotihuacan, "Museo de Antropología Nacional".

Any other city is safe, But better if u not come alone, u dont need to test your luck...

Chipas: BEAUTIFUL! If you go you must visit "El cañon del sumidero"

Yucatan: "Playa del Carmen" and "Isla Mujeres", mayan ruins.

Guerrero and Oaxaca have beautiful beaches

Guanajuato: Colonial city, If you go around october there's a festival called Cervantino, students from around the world and the country go to the festival and stay with mexican families (totally safe.. of course you have to pay).

Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan, beaches, small cities, frendly peaple

How much you spent will depend on where you go and how you get there. But in general is cheap.

All the states and cities have their own web page so you can see all the thing they have to offer, just google them.
