Question:

Backpacking alone 1st time to Taipei. Any Tips?

I've just resigned from my job. Nobody's as free (and jobless, ha!) as me to go on a trip, so I decided to travel alone. I'm on a super budget 10-days trip. I'm most concerned about finding cheap motel or backpackers inn there. Can anyone advise? What's their rates like? Is it hard to find budget accomodation there (I'm talking about those per night or per hour basis, not those 3 days 2 nights hotel package)?

Suppose I eat super budget street-side food and take only mainly public transport and minimal cab, how much do you think I should bring over for a 10-days trip?

  1. Seriously, bring cash, don't expect to use your US bank ATM card unless it has a little IC chip on it.

I had a nasty surprise when I try to use ATM to withdraw money with my US debit card, It is nasty if you do not bring enough cash to cover all your expense.

Now in Taiwan no ATM machine will accept any card without a embedded IC chip on it. I am not sure about paying with credit card without embedded chip. Anyone know?

  2. Hi, this sounds like what I done few years ago but with my mother to go then on a tiny budget but long timing (14 days to be exact, as then Singaporean can go there visa free for 14 days only). As for your problem, there are many budget hostels and hotels in Taipei but only a few that you can actually booked online. There is a budget hotel near Shandao Temple that I have stayed before which only cost you NT$950 per night few years ago. But for the safe side, I recommend you to stay at Taipei House Hostel at Songjiang Rd and there rates are affordable and their staffs are pretty friendly. Rates are from NT$600 for a bed in dorm room (6 or 8 beded) and from NT$1,520 for a private room for 2 person per room. All room are shared bathroom and you have to bring your own bathing stuff, but there are washing machine for you to used.

  3. it's easy to find budget inns/hotel/motel rooms for less than NTD1000 (USD30) a night. Also, you can get by with less than NTD300 (USD10) per day on transportation AND food (street side) so that wills set you back about NTD1300 (USD40) per day. good enough?

It's close to ShangDao Temple MRT. 2 mins from Supermarket, 24hrs convenience stores. Local Lunch box from NTD60/- Similar stuff always available at 7/11 from NTD55/-

Get the  Easy card for the duration of your trip. Take MRT and Bus within Taipei, no need to take cab unless it is very late at night. Easy card is discounted for MRT travel and for transfer to bus within the hour.

You can visit most tourist sites and Night Markets e.t.c. by the MRT and Bus combination.
