Backpacking around australia?

Any tips, stories, suggestions etc about backpacking around aus.. need some help and ideas..(I am an aussie)

YHA youth hostels are generally fairly cheap alternatives to hotels. In the major cities there are cheaper alternatives, but in smaller towns they're great. Also, if you're taking a friend, or even if you're not, You might want to check out Wicked Vans. They are around $30 a night, and they're a van with a bed, cutlery, limited cooking supplies and 24 hours road assistance.

if you go to darwin be carefull of the native aborigines sleeping and drinking on the street

Be careful.  The country isn't as friendly and safe as it used to be.
