I am planning to backpack around Europe for a month.

I have looked into RailEurope which looks cheap for travel but how hard will it be to find cheap accomodation without booking anywhere?

And how much will it cost for accomodation general living per day?

Thanks!

  1. If you are from America, double or triple the prices of what you would expect in dollars. Look into  youth hostels. You could consider hitchhiking. I've done it. Great way to meet people.

  2. That's a problem I ran into as well. If you book ahead of time (check out hostels.com, or hostelworld.com) you get the cheapest prices, but if you book last minute you can be stuck paying more. So booking ahead of time takes away from being spontaneous when you travel, but it can save you money. And when I say ahead of time, I mean 3-4 days which I guess isn't too bad. On average you'll be paying 15-25 euros per night for a hostel (during summer, fall/spring may be cheaper).

Also, taking a night train can save you the cost of having to sleep in a hostel and you dont waste a day traveling.

  3. Just go with the International Youth Hostels for the most part.  You should be able to get beds for the same day.  I doubt you will have too much trouble finding cheap rooms wherever you are.

General cost of living per day?  around 75 to 100 or so?  I'm not sure...dollar keeps on dropping, inflation is making things worse.  Difficult to figure, someone who has just gotten back should have a better idea.
