Backpacking in France - Where to?

Question

I'm hoping to spend next summer backpacking around France with a friend, staying in youth hostels (we don't have money to waste where unnecessary). We want to see both countryside and city life.

Any particularly beautiful places we should check out?

Where can we have a good time without breaking the bank?

If you like mountains go to meribel in the summer

or go to the south of france, apparently there are ment to be nice places to visit
