Is there any hospedajes, or hotels without cable tv, pools, and drunk kiddies? I am 30, a backpacker, and am in search of a good time in mexico/ belize without spending my life savings. I would like a roof, and maybe some coffee / tea in the morning... do you know a few places around mexico like that? I have traveled extensively in central america, and not afraid of a few mosquitoes, sand flies, freezing showers, long hot bus rides etc.

Appreciative of any and all feed back! Leaving Xmas, headed for cancun.

thanks

  1. I stayed at the below about two years ago.   Beautiful place you pretty much sleep in a tent on the beach.  Good food and drinks.  Close to Coba and Tulum.  Also, I bet if you kept going on that road it would lead you to Belize.

I'm not sure if its the right time of year but if you can check out the sea turtles that come out at night to lay eggs on the beach.

If you can't get in the below there are all sorts of small hotels on the way to it.

  2. You could try Mahahual. It's about 4 1/2 hours south of Cancun, by car. You can get there with buses/collectivos and any of the big travel guides will have info on the area. There's a place called the "Travel In" 6km south of town on the beach road that has camping and a good restaurant. We were in the area for a couple of weeks last year and there were also people camping along the beach (to the south) closer to town. Some stayed at one of the dive operations, and another group (with the Green Tortoise) was in the backyard of a local's place. I don't know if this is anything you could possibly book ahead though, you'd have to take your chances. There were quite a few backpacker types coming in and out of town.

Mahahual gets a cruise ship in a couple of times a week and turns into a bit of a nightmare. But once the ships are gone it is quite nice. There's good snorkeling/diving in the area and lots of restaurants from the cheap joints to mid-scale. There are also a fair amount of ruins within a reasonable distance (athough again, without a car they might be a challenge to reach). The beach road could be a pain too, without a car. There is a bus but it doesn't go that often.

  3. I have owner several Hostels in Mexico and also property in Mahahual which someone mentions below. There are a large number of Backpackers moving around and you will have a great time if you stay with them. The best way to review options of places to stay in advance is at a site www.hostelworld.com they have all the hostels worldwide listed and also rated by backpackers like yourself. Another great site is www.lonelyplanet.com where Backpackers Bloq their trips and offer advice on locals etc. All in all what you are talking about doing is very possible and in my opinion the best way to go. ENJOY!!!!!!
