Backpacking india- is it safe?

a friend and i r planning an around the world trip. india is on our list of countries to see and i wanted to know how safe it is to backpack independantly as aposed to being on an organised tour. we r both females aged in our early 20s. would this be a problem for us or should be be fine?? how easy is it to get around india- is train/bus the best option?? any other inforation to assist our travels would be great. thanks.

India is generally a safe country even for girls to travel on their own.  However, one must practise certain protocol: for eg: in smaller towns and rural areas, please cover yourself well.  However in places like Bombay (mumbai), being the fashion, modelling, Bollywood capital of India, you can wear what you like no matter how skimpy.  

    Please do not bring non veg food like beef in close contact with very traditional hindus as they consider it impure.  

    Our backpacking infrastructure however is not very good and I would recommend you girls to try medium to higher end accommodation which is safer for girls travelling on their own.
