  1. Check reviews of each hostel you're considering.  I stayed in a hostel in Scotland and because of my avid research of the places and hostel I stayed in, I had an amazing time.  I forgot to bring a towel to use for the shower, but they were very friendly and allowed me to use  one. Check them out, book ahead  of time and  send  questions if you're curious.  Hostels all in all are very great places to stay. You  generally meet people that are doing the same thing you are, backpacking, and will give you lots of insight on places to go, things to do, and what to avoid.  I had an excellent first time experience and  plan to do it in the future!

  2. i was in the military once and i ve been to europe and trust me never go to hostels bad things happen there trust me

  3. It totally varies from place to place.  One hostel might be in an old historical building with a library and free tea and coffee and another will be full of wild highschool groups making a mess of everything.  One thing for sure is lock up your valuables.  I tried the honor system thing and had clothes stolen from my bag.  Luckily I had put my money and cards, etc. in the safe.

Read "Let's Go Europe".  It's written by students who backpack around on a budget and they tell you straight up about each place, also where to eat and what to see, and they have great maps.

  4. do some research first and don't watch the movie Hostel if u already haven't :)

Nah,there are decent ones :) Have fun!
