Backpacking through France?

Question

I'm interested in attempting to backpack through France this summer or in the future if i can't plan it out soon enough.

I'm interested in hearing advice or tips, anything from locations to visit, ways to save money (I'm trying to go at the cheapest budget possible, even hostels that are 30-50 dollars a night sounds expensive), and etc. Anything that would help me organize and get through my trip.

couchsurfing is popular in France, especially in little cities or south of france, life is very expensive for an american (around double prices in Paris)

But people are friendly and you can make friends easily especially in summer south of france during festivals (avignon), paris is empty in august, everybody go south  for vacation.
