  1. When you apply for a license in any health care occupation, and for most employment opportunities in health care a criminal background check is mandatory.  On a nursing license application you are asked to list all convictions other than routine traffic citations, including misdemeanors.  You will then be asked to submit documentation as to how these were adjudicated and the records of any penalty or probation.  The Board of Nursing in your state will determine your case on an individual basis.  Ordinarily minor offenses if in the past with a clear record since will not present a significant issue.  However, you are now required to submit fingerprint cards to be licensed initially, and then they will ask for an updated fingerprint search during re-licensure (this is reasonably new, and has just started in most states).  Contact the Board of Nursing in your state for specific guidance as each state is different.  Employers in a health care setting may elect to select another applicant based on your criminal record whether you have been granted a license or not.
