I'm joining the swim team this year(i'll be a junior in high school) and i've been practicing a little down at the local fitness center. Our team really needs a good backstroker and i like doing backstroke so it fits, but i want to know if my times are good

I can swim a 33 second 50 meter backstroke and a 29 second 50 meter freestyle.

I have yet to learn how to do flipturns or "dolphin kick" How much time will this take off once I learn how to do it?

  1. those times are pretty good, if you know how to do flip turns right, it can take about 2-4 seconds off if you really can get a good push. but since your that old you probable won't swim a 50m unless its in a relay. swim a 100m back and a 100m free, your times for the back should be under 110, and your time for the free should be under 1:00. then that can really help your team out.

  2. it isnt terribly fast for your age group in australia, but it is good. the average times people in your age group go around 34-35 for b/k and 31 for f/s. I go 31.32 for b/k and a 27.94 for f/s. the top 13-14yr old can do a 24 for fs and a 28 for bk. the turns are important, talk to your coach on mastering them. a good turn can make the difference from winning or losing. dolphin kicks improve the streamlining off the wall, so it is a good asset to have. it will take approx. 1.5-2 seconds off if you can turn and dolphin kick off.

  3. Your times are very impressive considering that you are a first time swimmer. Keep up the good work and you should be a star on your team. The average times for your age and experience are 40 sec on backstroke and 35 free.

  4. it might take time off in a 25 pool, but if you get good at it, it should improve your time.
