Backyardigans question?

Question

What is Uniqua (pink pokadot charachter in Backyardigans)? I would assume something along the lines of an ant or a ladybug. Watch it in the morning with the kids, and it bugs me cause I was asked what she is and I didn't know.

If you google Uniqua there's a remarkable amount of controversy surrounding this question but Nick jr. says she's just unique...
