Question:

Bacteria dont have introns but eukaryotes have them. Why do we need these introns?

Other than the fact that they allow gene to be alternatively spliced given more diversity of proteins. why do we need them as they are non coding regions. Bateria function well without them. SO why do we need them

  2. I remember there being a specific answer to this when I took genetics...

    To the best of my knowledge, it seems like allowing genes to be alternatively spliced is one of the better reasons. Also, I believe a lot of higher organisms' genome is made of residual viral DNA that has been incorporated into their DNA.

    But, as long as they allow normal reproduction and inheritance, they don't really need a reason to be there.
