Bad 1992 Virago 750 alternator?

Zero trouble starting the bike for months. After pulling over to the side of the highway to make a phonecall, the bike wouldn't start. A jump start would make it turn over, but it would die without throttle. I few miles of walking produced a new battery which roared the bike back to life. I though everything was OK after a few days without a hitch, but exactly one week later I went for a ride, and after a visit to the store, it wouldn't turn over. It produces a rapid clicking sound when attempting to start. A jumpstart gets it going just fine, but it requires a jumpstart EVERY TIME! Busted alternator? The replacement battery is a little larger than its predecessor. Will it fry any circuits? Should I try and recharge the battery? Thanks for your help!!!

  1. Your Stator and/or Regulator/rectifier is shot.

  2. bigger battery will not fry circuits ,sounds like its not charging, most have a rectifier/regulator assembly and a winding assembly in motor ,if you dont own the shop manual for the bike the buy one and it will walk you thru diagnosis,a ten dollar 12 volt meter will be all you need to get thru it,charge battery with atrickle charger, low batteries are hard on motoircyle charging systems, clymer manuals are great ,if you can read english and follow simple directions with good pictures you wont ever have to pay someone to work on your bike again
