Do you think it is rude for a bartender to take a tip while the customer is still sitting at the bar? My friend takes the tip off the bar the second someone puts it there.I say she should wait until the customer is finished and leaves. What does everyone think?

  1. a bartender should take a tip as soon as it's proffered.  if they leave it sitting on the bar the customer may accidently take it back, or other customers may "accidently" think it's theirs.. Besides,  it gives the bartender a chance to personally thank the customer..

  2. I don't think its a big deal at all. The tip has been given, why should they have to leave it sitting there and risk someone stealing it? If the customer isn't fully satisfied they shouldn't have put a tip down in the first place.

  3. Wait till the customer leaves.

  4. does not matter,it's depend upon one's mentality

  5. wait until they leave- i don't take the tip off the restaurant table until they've gone

  6. I don't think it's a big deal.  To be honest, I get kind of worried that, with all the cash sitting in pile on the counter, someone else (either an employee or a customer) will jack it when no one's looking.

But I also hate having to tell a bartender how to make something, correct him three times when he tries to make it wrong, and then still tip him for basically making me work harder than if I made the drink myself.

  7. I think each customer is different.  Learn to read them and the bartender will know when to take the tip.  If someone lays the money down I will wait for them to say its mine or some body jesture indicating its mine..  Always I thank them.

  8. It's not bad etiquette to take a tip at the time it is given, with a "thank you" of course. The bar that I work at can get very busy, tip money starts to pile up. A college kid has no problem using money they were going to use for tips to buy more drinks, or pick up someone else's tip and use it... which means less tips for the bartenders. Aside from that, if someone sits at the bar for 4 hours and has 10 drinks, and you don't take the tip, that will be the cheap jerk who leaves that $1 bill siting there the whole time, a $1 tip is not cool on a $50 tab.
