Bad Chest Pain? Any idea what this could be? Please help?

For the past three days I've had the intense strong pain in my chest. Its around my breast area. The worse pain is between my breast, however the pain is carried on through out the whole upper body, by my lungs and heart. I have no idea what this could be? I've actually have had this pain before, but this time the pain seems to be getting worse and worse. It hurts really bad to breathe and move around. When it happens it feels hard to breathe even if trying and then as if my heart is beating really fast. It passes sooner or later, then after I feel really sick to my stomach and sometimes even get a cramping feeling in my left arm.

I haven't told my mom because she always tells me it will pass and just to suck it up. She refuses to take me to see any doctor. It feels to me its getting worser but I came here to see what you guys think it might be to maybe make it a little more reasonable to see a doctor. I just want to be sure it's not serious.

Please and Thanks.

  1. Megan,

Please get to a doctor. Pain is always natures way of telling you that something is wrong. If your mom refuses to take you to a doctor, go yourself, call the paramedics, call 911, call the fire department, call the police, call a friend, but get to a doctor now.

  2. Possibilities that fit what you describe could be costalchondritis (inflammation of the cartilage attaching your ribs to your sternum) or intercostalitis (inflammation of the muscles between your ribs).  Both are common in young women, and both can put a women through h**l.

Pneumonia is a remote possibility based on your description.  I would expect certain other s/s to appear in your description if it is pneumonia.  If you've had a recent injury to your chest, broken ribs, sprained rib muscles, and certain SERIOUS conditions relating to your lungs are possible.

Heart problems are a remote possibility, but remain a possibility.  Teen girls HAVE died from heart attacks caused by blood clots; pulmonary embolism is equally painful (and fatal) and can also be caused by a blood clot.

You should address this with your mother.  Show her this response.  Insist on being seen by a physician; if there is a free clinic in your community, ask to go there.  Unfortunately, most communities require parental consent to treat a teen; if her consent is not forthcoming, you will need to go to your school nurse and explain that your parents are negligent because they have refused you proper access to medical care, or go to a local social services agency (your local Department of Health, or your local equivalent of Child Protective Services) and explain the situation.

IF your problem is an inflammation as I described above, a doctor might order ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) 600 or 800 mg at noon and midnight, and 650 of acetaminophen (tylenol) 6p and 6a, or something similar to that.

  3. i would definitely see a doctor asap...if it hurts more when you take a deep breath it may be pneumonia..either way i recommend you see a doctor

  4. Get yourself to a doctor fast. You will have peace of mind once you get checked out by a doctor.
