Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open set to feature a strong field in Switzerland – Golf News
Tim Thelen is set to defend his title at this week Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open, which will mark its 18th consecutive edition this year.
The tournament will once again be staged at the Golf Club Bad Ragaz, the same course that has been hosting the event since 1997, making it the longest running host venue on the tour.
The Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open was the first of three Senior Tour events that Thelen will defend this year. Last year, he held off former Ryder Cup captains Ian Woosnam and Mark James to claim the second Senior Tour title of his
career.
This year, the field is expected to be really strong, especially with the addition of Juan Quiros, Carl Mason and Angel Fernandez, who share the course record at the Golf Club Bad Ragaz. Each of the three legendary players recorded
61s at the 6,183 yard par 70 course in 2006, 2008 and 2011, respectively.
At the same time, rookie Jamie Spence also confirmed his participation in the event. He also enjoyed one of the highlights of his career in another part of Switzerland, when he won the 1992 European Masters by overcoming a 10-shot
deficit against the leader in the final round and then conquering the field in the playoffs.
Philip Golding, who recently won the http://www.europeantour.com/seniortour/season=2013/tournamentid=2013848/leaderboard/index.html as his maiden European Senior Tour victory, is also in the field and is expecting to repeat his last year’s heroics of three consecutive rounds of 64, a feat no one else ever achieved in the history of the European, Challenge
and the Senior Tour.
Woosnam, who finished third in last year’s edition of the event, is desperate to return to winning ways after two years, when he tees off in Bad Ragaz.
Apart from Thelen, other past winners who committed to participate in the event include Peter Fowler, Denis O’Sullivan and the only three-time champion of the tournament, Mason.
According to the golf commentators, everyone in the field will have to work really hard on their games, in order to mount a title charge on the weekend.
