  1. You could block sites, but remember that predators can be anywhere, especially on sites that are made for kids and that are thought to be safe.

Better than just blocking sites would be to educate your cousin about internet safety and the existence of predators.

  2. There really aren't any specific sites that sexual predators flock to. What would be the point? parents would block those sites and that'd be that.

I think you're far better off to train her what to say and what not to say. Never give out personal information, even something as simple as the name of her school. Never post pictures online. Never agree to meet someone.

I'm sure there are parent sites with more suggestions. Now, to whom do I complain that a question about sexual predators was placed in the LGBT section?

  3. ANY site where teens and kids hang out attracts predators.  The best thing you can do is really stress to her not to give out any personal info (real name, phone #, address, school she goes to, etc.) or share pics of herself or agree to meet anyone she's talked to on-line.  Another good idea is to only allow her to use the computer in a room where adults can monitor her activity.  If you're concerned don't let her have a computer in her room.  Let her use one in the living room where you can keep an eye on things.

  4. Really, they're everywhere and they're not very common.

Just talk to her about giving out her address and stuff.

My mom just told me to NEVER put any information about where I live - except country and MAYBE state.

I think it's important to let her onto these sites because they're very good for her social experience at that age.

Just tell her to be careful

She probably won't meet anybody new anyway - just chat with her school friends.

  5. It's not only websites. Many predators lurk in chat rooms to find young girls and boys. You have to be careful wherever you go to socialize on the internet.

  6. MySpace, in particular. There was an article published about a year ago about sexual predators on that site.

  7. myspace, definitely. theres heaps of stories circulating about young girls talking to guys who think they are at a similar age, only to meet them and being molested and stuff.

the scary thing is, its so easy to create a fake account on myspace. just put up a picture of some guy you found on google images, make up a history and voila. a sexual predator has their cover.
