Bad Tomatoes?

Is there anyway to clean the tomatoes that have the salmonella problem?

Can they be washed good with something?

Can they be used if they are cooked into something?

Wasn't this the same thing that happened to all the lettuce last year? It was the Mexican workers that had the salmonella on their hands that were transferring it to the lettuce.

  1. Not sure, but you can avoid the problem all together if you buy locally. :)

  2. I think if you bought the tomatoes from a regular grocery store you're pretty safe. It's mostly the wholesale tomatoes that went to restaurants that has the problems.

But if you think your tomatoes might be contaminated, the best thing to do is throw them away.

  3. fda.gov

  4. Well from what I heard on Fox News sometimes you can just wash them, but lots of times the salmonella is inside the tomato

  5. don't wash cut the tomatoes...and throw away the affected area...then remove the juices inside...because it is also infected with salmonella....so the thing which will be left to you is the sliced one without salmonella and without its juice..then washed it properly...

  6. If you cooked them into tomato sauce they should be OK.  Not sure if quick stir frying would be enough.  There is salmonella on most chicken and some eggs and it's only a problem they they are undercooked.

  7. What salmonella problem? I have never heard of any vege's having that, only eggs. I doubt they are safe to eat if that is true.

  8. They're all fine now.  You should see them in groceries & restaurants again....
