Bad cuts from braces?

Question

hi ive had braces for quite some time now and i got the elastics put on so they put some sharp hooks on to hold them, and now ive been getting really bad cuts that look like streaks in my mouth. they are fairly deep and sometimes i bite them on accident and it hurts like he11!! It looks like it is forming scar tissue and hopefully not canker sores. But can these cut marks get infected and become something bad?? thnx

yea it happened to me too...i just ignored them and finally got use to it xP   they could get infected and all but that hasn't happened to me so ... i dont kno how it'll work out for u

No they will be all right. Ask your orthodontist to give you a small packet of wax that you can put on your teeth while you adjust to the cuts. Also, bring this up with your ortho at your next visit and they might need to adjust the hooks.

If he/she says the hooks are all right the best things you can do is learn to adjust. I know it sucks but trust me it is SO worth it in the end.

Also the mouth is one of the fastest healing parts of your body. No matter what adress these concerns with your ortho. Good luck.

I wore braces TWICE in my life.

Each time I had the same condition.  -  What each of my orthodontists let me use was dental wax.  -  Simply covering each sharp edge helped me talk and eat much easier.

yeah, this happened to me all the time, and it was really painful and all, but it never infected and eventually got better.

ok. mouths generally heal well on their own. but to help prevent the cuts, use double the amount of braces wax..like fromwalmart. also,let your dentist know this. braces shouldnt be beating you up!

Did the orthodontist give you any wax to put on the braces in parts where they are sharp? When I had braces, years ago, I was given some wax, and when any part of the braces irritated my mouth, I'd mould some wax over that part of the braces and leave it there until the irritation went away.

That said, sometimes I couldn't be bothered using the wax, and I have two deep scars in my mouth from when I didn't use it. I'd suggest asking the orthodontist for some wax, if he hasn't given you any.

no, if you use hydrogen peroxide and rinse your mouth everyday then it will not become infected...also the wax REALLY does help. :)

the orthodontist should have given you wax when you first got braces to put over the hooks if you run out call your orthodontist and they should send some to you and no the cuts cant get infected

ask your orthodontist for some wax... they should have given you some to prevent those wires from digging into your mouth.  Either call or have you parents call in the morning.  It will be much better with the wax on the ends.  It's a pain, but it is worth it in the long run.

THats happening to me all the time. i asked my dentist about it then he told me its nothing and actually you can put salt on ur cheeks ( doesnt burn )  and it will numb your cuts and you wont cut your teeth anymore or get oral-j from wal,mart and put some on ur braces after you brush in the mornin and at night.   ( i cut myself at night ).              Hope I  Helped !!!!
